Blog: Recapping the loss against Carolina

The Kyle Shanahan era began with a 23-3 loss at home against the Carolina Panthers.

From talking to my friends I am already hearing that Brian Hoyer is garbage, he isn’t a good quarterback, etc.

I will admit, the game was not very entertaining and I found myself getting bored at times but we need to focus on the positives and negatives.

The defense did their job by only allowing one touchdown in the first half. The 49ers were losing 13-0 at the half and it is worth pointing out that the touchdown in the first half had a lot to do with Brian Hoyer getting blindsided and the Panthers recovering the ensuing fumble in 49ers territory and giving Cam Newton excellent field position.

I like how the 49ers’ defense is looking and I am hoping that Reuben Foster will not be out for a significant amount of time. Kudos to the defense for playing hard and to Jaquiski Tartt for his interception in the first half.

Carlos Hyde & Pierre Garcon

No surprise that Garcon led the 49ers with 6 receptions for 81 yards. It was great to see better play from our wide receivers after last season.

Carlos Hyde continues to show that he is a good running back but unfortunately he continues to suffer from game flow and how the 49ers are accustomed to playing from behind.

Offensive Line

You would probably expect me to blast the entire offense but there is no way I can do that right now. The offensive line needs to improve and it was clearly evident that Zane Beadles needs to be replaced at left guard if he continues to get beat so easily. Perhaps it is time to see Laken Tomlinson start next game at left guard on the road against Seattle.

To all the people bashing Hoyer, please CALM DOWN! Brian Hoyer is our stop-gap QB, he is not our quarterback of the future, and I liked the way he played yesterday aside from the interception thrown to Kuechly.

In the first quarter he made a nice deep pass that was NOT caught by Marquise Goodwin. The 49ers almost had a touchdown late in the game on 4th down but Carlos Hyde did not follow his block to the outside and instead was stopped short.

The bottom line is that the 49ers have a young team this season and it will be a struggle but given how the 49ers’ defense played I think they will be able to grind out some wins here and there.

Will the first win come on Sunday? Probably not but I am hoping to see them put some pressure on Russell Wilson and the Seahawk running backs.
